E3 2010: Sony Round-up

As with all our other pressers we’ve got a round-up of Sony’s from last night. Few megaton announcements than we were hoping for but some pretty good announcements none-the-less, plus one people thought they’d never see on PlayStation 3…

PlayStation Plus

Sony’s announcement of PlayStation Plus is akin to that of Xbox Live Gold, however having a basic account will not take away any of the features users have at present.

PlayStation Plus aims to bring value-added to PlayStation Network by offer exclusive services and content when the service launches on June 29th to the 50 million registered PSN users.

There will be two price tiers for PlayStation Plus, one a 3 month subscription and the other a year long, with users in Japan and Hong Kong having the option of a 30 day subscription. The 3 month pack will cost in North America $17.99 and in Europe €14.99, with the year long subscription costing in North America $49.99 and in Europe €49.99. The 30 day sub will be priced at 500 yen and HK$38.

PlayStation Plus will offer users PlayStation Store discounts, Full game trials, free games from a selection of Mini’s, PS1 classics and PSN titles. There will also be early access to beta trials, game demos and video content before free users get their mits on it.

The service also offers automatic updates whereby your PS3 will automatically start up at a designated time to download content and will turn off after the download has completed.

PlayStation Move

PlayStation Move was given a release date of September 15th at E3 for Europe with an RRP of €39.99, with Move hitting the USA September 19th for $49.99, and in Japan on October 21 for 3,980 yen. The PlayStation Move navigation controller will also become available on the same day in each region at a RRP of €29.99, US$29.99 and 2,980 yen respectively.

Sony plan to release more than 20 titles that have Move support by March 2011, with titles such as Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition, Tiger Woos PGA Tour 11 and Heavy Rain having support for the new controller.

Below you’ll find some videos of how Move was demoed at E3 last night, with Sorcery looking pretty interesting!

PlayStation Sound System

Whilst not mentioned during the actual presentation, Sony also have revealed they plan to release a subwoofer built-in, all-in-one Surround Sound System for the PlayStation 3, which will use Sony’s S-Force PRO Front Surround Sound to mimic surround sound out of one speaker.

The Surround Sound System comes with two audio inputs − an optical audio input for connecting high-end entertainment systems including PS3, and an analog audio input for connecting portable devices like the PSP. However we find the omission of HDMI in strange as for a console that prides itself on HD, this means that the sound system cannot decode HD codecs like DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD.

The system will cost 19,800 yen/$199/€199 and go on sale this Autumn. However, if it were us, we’d recommend buying a proper surround sound system.

PSP

Everyone was wrong, there was no PSP 2 at E3. Instead Sony plan to push forward with it’s current UMD and flash memory based PSP’s with new games and a new aggressive advertising campaign.

Isabelle Tomatis, European Product Marketing Manager, Hardware and Platforms, at SCEE commented, “This year we have some great titles coming to PSP to expand our catalogue and offer a diverse range of experience for all audiences. We aim to make sure that every PSP user – and younger newcomers in particular – can choose from a range of titles to suit their taste. Combining games, music, movies and chat, PSP opens up a world of handheld entertainment for everyone.”

Sony plan to get the PSP to appeal to a wider range with new titles ranging from EyePet on PSP to a brand new God of War title.

3D

Again Sony pushed 3D hard, with the announcement that titles such as MotorStorm: Apocalypse, Killzone3, The Sly Raccoon Collection and Gran Turismo5 will all have 3D support.

Moreover, third party titles such as Crysis 2,Mortal Kombat 9 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will all have 3D too. Four PS3 titles offering stereoscopic gaming experiences are currently available for download from the PlayStation Network including PAIN, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Super Stardust HD and WipEout HD. Additionally, PS3 will make stereoscopic 3D Blu-ray movie support available later this year.

Kevin Butler

He came. He saw. He conquered.

Portal 2 on PlayStation 3

Arguably Sony’s biggest win of the night was Gabe Newell coming on stage to announce Portal 2 with Steam support on PlayStation 3, which was truly an “OMG WTF!!!!111111″ moment for all watching.

Newell said that Portal 2 on PS3 would be the best version on any console due to the support of Steam that will allow auto-updating, the use of the Steam Cloud and all the social features that Steam brings.

EA show their love for Sony; plenty of exclusive content

After promising some Sony love at their conference, EA duly delivered with exlusive content for Dead Space 2 and Medal of Honor.

What was revealed for Dead Space 2 was PS3-exclusive Limited Edition which will see Dead Space Extraction packed in for free on January 28th, with Extraction having PlayStation Move support. The game will be remastered in Full HD and features the obligatory trophy support. Dead Space Extraction will also be sold via PSN.

EA also announced that players who buy Medal of Honor on PS3 this October will also receive an HD remastering of Medal of Honor Frontline, which will be exclusive to Sony’s special edition package.

Oh, and check out the epic beard on the Medal of Honor guy!!!

More exclusive content

Ubisoft’s also appeared on stage to announce that the multiplayer beta for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood will be exclusive to PlayStation 3, and that the game will also get exclusive content on PS3.

2K’s Mafia II will also include exclusive day one content when bought on PS3.

Gran Turismo 5 dated

This will be a day long remembered. Gran Turismo 5 is coming (to North America at least) on Novmeber 2nd.

They also released another trailer. Still, at least we got a date.

New Twisted Metal announced

David Jaffe you lying so and so! After months of denial there he was at E3 to announce a new Twisted Metal coming to PS3 in 2011.

Again, only a video will do this justice.

Killzone 3 footage

Last but not least we were treated to some brand new Killzone 3 footage.

It’s pre-alpha code but looking well!

Below you can find various press releases from Sony’s E3.

LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 15, 2010 Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has announced four great PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) experiences for younger gamers – Jungle Party, Invizimals™: Shadow Zone™, EyePet™ and Everybody’s Tennis – all guaranteed to put a bounce (or a screech) into every car trip, bus ride or crafty late-night portable gaming session. Set to arrive later this year, each of these games will be riding high on holiday gift lists, and with good reason – they’ll deliver a world of long-lasting fun straight into players’ hands, to be shared with friends or enjoyed alone.

Go nuts in the jungle with Jungle Party

Feeling like a cheeky monkey? You’ll love taking this rapid-fire collection of 15 madcap mini-games from the original PlayStation®2 hit out on the move with PSP. Get ready for button-bashing fun in a jungle paradise as you share fifteen fast and fun challenges with up to four players using Pass Around mode or Game Sharing. And don’t worry if you’re on your own – computer-controlled chimps will take up the slack. This treetop riot is easy to play and packed with ape antics; whether you’re bashing totem poles, leaping across lilypads, playing baseball with an elephant, blowing cheeky bubbles in the bathtub or even taming a lion, the fun doesn’t stop. Prepare to run wild in your very own portable Jungle Party! Available later this year.

Track hidden monsters in Invizimals™: Shadow Zone

Prepare to return to the amazing world of Invizimals – a hidden realm within our own world, populated by invisible creatures that you can only see through your PSP camera. Seek out 100 brand new characters who could be lurking anywhere in your home or garden – then trap them and unleash their miniature powers on your foes. Prepare to do battle against a dark force with its own evil, twisted Invizimals who have designs on your personal collection of miniature monsters. Customise and train your army of weird and wonderful creatures for a battle that’ll take all of your powers as an Invizimal hunter to win – and then team up with a friend to go hunting together in a brand-new co-op mode for two players. Available later this year.

Take EyePet™  out and about

That’s right –  the PlayStation®3 augmented reality sensation EyePet is coming to PSP to take out and about with you wherever you go. After melting hearts and running amok in living rooms, EyePet’s making the jump to PSP where, using the PSP camera, you’ll be able to play with him in the park, train him on the bus and feed him at a restaurant with your family – strictly under the table, of course. Just like a real pet, he’s fun, cheeky and wants to interact all the time. You’ll be responsible for feeding him, bathing him and training him – he’ll reward you by learning to draw, making his own toys, leaping into your photos and even catching fish. Even if you’re stuck at home in the rain, every day can be a trip to the zoo with the pocket power of EyePet on PSP. Available later this year.

It’s game, set and match to Everybody’s Tennis

Take to the court and serve up a storm with Everybody’s Tennis, the latest pick-up-and-play challenge from a much-loved PlayStation franchise. Easy to start, but tricky to master, this colourful game takes players on a quirky world tour of virtual tennis where walloping balls back and forth is only half the fun. Customise your unique tennis player with hundreds of different items, then set off on a journey to tennis stardom that lets you get as good as you want without piling the pressure on. You can take the world on in an epic single-player solo story mode, or you can share the fun in a tournament with your friends on the bus, in the playground, or even at a real-life tennis match as long as you don’t grunt too loudly.
