So unless you’ve been living under a rock/on Mars/been gagged, cant see and your ears stuffed (whatever your excuse may be), Infinity Ward announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last week at the GDC awards, coming out Worldwide on Tuesday November 10th 2009 for PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360, as well as the PC.
But you may have noticed that in the trailer and the later press release that came out with it that there was no mention of the COD name. Infact, it was confirmation that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was popular enough to be a series in its own right.
But the truth may not be as such.
For the past couple of years, Activision, who holds the IP to Call of Duty, has been switching back and forth ffrom developer to developer on Call of Duty, starting after the release of Call of Duty 2 on the Xbox 360. Activision appointed Treyarch as the developer for Call of Duty 3 while IW worked on, what was to be unknown at the time, Call of Duty 4.
Compared to Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2, which Infinity Ward developed, Treyarch a medicore at best effort with COD3. Everyone just wanted Infinity Ward back and have Call of Duty 4, which would head into Modern Warfare. Plus, as well as COD3, Treyarch’s other COD ames have been worse on the PS2 then they were with COD3. They released Call of Duty: Big Red One for the PS2, GameCube and Xbox (while COD2 itself was on the 360) and needless to say, it didnt come out as good compared to COD2 on the reviews front.
And everyone got their wish, Infinity Ward came back with a much stronger game in MW, arguably the finest FPS this generation by far. It has sold so far (according to Activision) 12 million copies and is still played actively online, even after the release of WaW. But then while IW would start work on MW2, instead of waiting 2 years for Call of Duty 5, Activision decided to released Call of Duty: World at War which would go back to it’s WW2 roots after development was handed to Treyarch.
World at War was recieved a little better then COD3 but compared to IW’s efforts, it still didnt do as well in the eyes of the most hardcore gamer. Even Rob Bowling from IW slammed Treyarch on their efforts and been compared to IW, saying:
Seriously man…. You’re killing me!
If I see one more Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare google alert come through my inbox, that ends up being a COD:WaW article that is only showing up because YOU referenced Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare more times than you mention World At War….
Especially when you’re pulling shit out of your ass. Come on man, interview about your game. Not OURS! Call of Duty: World at War can stand on it’s own merits, leave ours out of it. Like this gem of a quote from today’s article on CVG…
“In the previous Call of Dutys it might take three or four shots from a bolt action rifle,” he explained. “We made sure that a single shot centre mass would kill that opponent because that’s the expectation of the player.”
WTF are you talking about?! “in previous Call of Dutys blah blah blah”. First of all, you didn’t work on “previous Call of Dutys”, so don’t talk as if you’re down with how / why things were designed the way they were. Second, you’re completely fucking wrong.
Bolt Action rifles are one hit kills in every Call of Duty we (Infinity Ward) made!!
I won’t compare it to World at War’s Bolt Actions, I can’t speak to that because I don’t work there. Just like you don’t work here, so please stop talking about our games.
A rule of thumb I like to use is…. when promoting your game. Promote YOUR game. Don’t compare it to another game, or reference what OTHER games did in the past, pitch YOUR game. I mean, you have lots of cool things you could talk about… like Nazi Zombies….
Can you guys please stop interviewing this guy, talk to someone who actually works on the Dev Team at Treyarch and knows what the fuck they’re talking about. Not Senior Super Douche Noah Heller from Activision – who apparently has never played the game and doesn’t even work at the developer.
Alright, I’m done ranting… but I can’t take another google alert of garbage coming through my inbox with bullshit quotes from this guy.
Simply put, the cracks were showing and Infinity Ward needed to move away. So, instead of doing an actual Call of Duty 5 with Call of Duty 5: Modern Warfare 2 or whatever, Infinity Ward moved away from their own IP and decided to do Modern Warfare 2.
Now, personally, I think its a move from Infinity Ward to move away from the Call of Duty series, Treyarch are ruining the good name of the series with their medicore efforts compared to Infinity Ward. IW have done an absolute fantastic job on the IP itself with COD1, 2 and 4 but with all the effort been put in of Treyarch and Activision getting it out every year, and infact, them now turning into the old version of EA, it’s no surprise IW has moved away from COD.
I can only hope that if they (Activision) are gonna give the COD dev rights to Treyarch, there better be a compromise deal that see them stay away from Modern Warfare 2. We dont want another great gaming series going down the tube already and ruined by the consistant milking of Activision and the development from Treyarch.
