Top 5 Dreamcast Games We Want On The PlayStation Store

dreamcast

Ah the Dreamcast. Sega’s last foray into the console market sadly paled in comparison to Sony’s ubiquitous PlayStation 2, the Dreamcast sadly was much unloved by the mass market but this didn’t stop it becoming a legend in it’s own right, having some of the best titles of it’s generation, some of which could be heading to the PlayStation Store if the rumours are to be believed.

So, let’s crack on to the list of what games should definitely come to the PS Store!

toy commander

5. Toy Commander

Almost Toy Story like in it’s execution, No Cliché’s brilliantly designed ‘war’ game was genius. The story is relatively simple and focuses on a kid called Andy (Toy Story reference fo’ sho’) or Guthy if you’re playing the EU version of it. Andy gets a brand new set of Army toys for Christmas, leaving his other toys feeling rather negelected, and a rebellion ensues led by Huggy Bear, who was Andy’s childhood bear, and it’s up to you to go out and kick some toy ass!

The graphics were great at the time and haven’t aged too badly, standing the test of time well but what really sells this game is the pure outright charm it oozes from the minute you boot it up, with it is pure simple gameplay and with surprising depth, will keep you coming back for more.

sonic adventure

4. Sonic Adventure

It’s impossible to pass the little blue fella’ up in a Sega list, he is their savour, their hero, their mascott, he is Sega personified.

Sonic’s first 3D iteration wasn’t perfect but did you really care? This was your favourite blue hedgehog now rendered in the third dimension, Mario had been there now Sonic too. The game was non-stop fun, with a perfect control scheme on the Dreamcast (just as well, as the game was blisteringly fast in parts!).

Variety of the level design keeps it fresh throughout, and with 6 playable characters (each with their own take on the story line) the game has plenty going for it.

skies of arcadia

3. Skies of Arcadia

Arguably one of the best RPG’s of all time for some people, this was the Dreamcast’s Final Fantasy. RPG’s were a bit of a rarity on the Dreamcast but Skies was the sort of game that made up for it.

The  story focused on protagonist Vyseand his friends as they attempt to stop the Valuan Empire from reviving ancient weapons with the potential to destroy the world. The story in the game was top notch, and was a match for a lot of what Square has produced.

Production values are of the highest order, the game look, sounded and played great with classic RPG elements such as turn-based gameplay and random battles (though they were almost too common).

Jet Grind Radio

2. Jet Grind Radio

Unique is one word I’d throw in to describe Jet Grind Radio, another would be brilliant, this was a killer title on the Dreamcast which was just endlessly fun from start to finish, and could be credited with spearheading cel shaded graphics (which haven’t aged much as a result and still looks well).

Jet Grind has you playing the role of a member of the GG’s, whose aim is to take over the city with cans of spray paint by tagging the various districts. JGR sadly was overlooked on the Dreamcast, and is another of those under-rated classics. If this game does come to PSN, jump at the chance to get it. You won’t be disappointed by it.

Oh, and the soundtrack rocked too. It. Was Just. Awesome.

shemnue

1. Shenmue

What the hell is Shenmue? It’s not your typical game that you can just slot into a genre, Sega marketed it in a brand new catagory, FREE (Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment) so you can sort of see how Shenmue was always going to be a bit different.

The game brought players unparalleled levels of interactivity, the amount of lovingly crafted detail in the city of Shenmue immerses you in a way you won’t imagine possible. Be warned though, Shenmue isn’t for you out there with a short attention span, the majority of the beginining of the game is devoted to story, cracking skulls comes later.

Shenmue is almost Metal Gear Solid esque in that it wants to be more than a game, and thankfully, this game has the substance in bucketloads to back its lavish ambitions up. This was the best Dreamcast game ever made, and was itself a reason to buy the console.

So, that conclude the list of the top 5 games we’d like to see on the PS Store, but missed out some titles have we? Give us a shout in the comments section and point out what we missed!

There are three titles I did want to include though, which were Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles, Seaman and Soul Calibur but alas they didn’t make it onto the list, but could’ve easily on another day (well maybe not Jedi Power Battles for many of you but I loved it to bits).

  1. Great list. If I ever get a PS3 and these make it I’ll def be buying them all! Skies of Arcadia looks just too good.

  2. Virtual On will be one of the games i would really want on psn

  3. Nice list (especially #1 and #2), but I would like to add Crazy Taxi, which was really great too. :)

  4. Shenmue…yes! Sonic Adventure, Jet Grind Radio and Skies of Arcadia all fared better on other consoles. Instead of Toy Commander try Re-Volt…what a multi-player gem that would be online!

  5. Skies of Arcadia was so damn awesome, if any rpg deserves a ps3/360 remake it would be this game right here, to hell with FF7 I say!

Love the list but I have to say Power Stone is on the top of my List.

  7. I’m so glad they included Toy Commander on the list! I have always felt that was one of the most underrated games on Dreamcast! Especially the split screen multiplayer!

Personally I would’ve included Resident Evil: Code Veronica on that list as well.

  8. I don’t know why this damn article was even made, because anybody who makes the same list will include the same games.

Just say you want successful Dreamcast games

  9. Sonic Adventure 2 :’(

Not sure about Toy Commander but I desperately want the rest. I’ve been looking to buy a Dreamcast but with this rumour about I’m gonna hold off for a bit.

  11. I think if anything they should put up the following, House of the dead 2(or typing of the dead), of course crazy taxi 1 & 2, Mortal Kombat Gold, San Francisco Rush 2049, and Hydro Thunder which are like all awesome games.

  12. id add record of lodoss war to that list, i really enjoyed that game. I agree with toy commander and skies on the list, those are both great games.
