SCE UK now warn of PlayStation 3 shortages

Posted in PlayStation 3 with tags , on February 16, 2010 by James Love

After SCEA warned yesterday that the PlayStation 3 could be in short supply over the coming weeks, SCE UK have now warned MCV the same could be true in the UK.

Sales directer Mark Howsen said “Since we launched the slimline PS3 model, the demand has been overwhelming – running over 20 per cent ahead of our expectations…[however] this has lead to some stock issues, particularly with the 120Gb model. We are doing our best to address these issues and hope to catch up in the next few weeks.”

With big name exclusives such as Heavy Rain, God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII all within the space of just over a month, Sony will no doubt want to keep stock levels high over the coming period.

THQ have announced that they’re bringing an extended demo of Darksiders to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The demo will take around an hour and a half to complete and should more than satisfy those who are still undecided on the game.

David Adams, General Manager of Vigil Games commented: “We are really pumped to be bringing a playable demo for Darksiders to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We really wanted to give gamers a true idea of the variety of gameplay that the game offers and so rather than just making a standard 20-minute demo version of the first few levels.”

The demo goes live Feb 25th on Xbox LIVE and on the PlayStation Store.

Posted in Codemasters, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 with tags , , , , , on February 15, 2010 by James Love

Codemasters has confirmed to CVG that it has a new shooter coming from the man behind Criterion’s Black.

A rumour of Stuart Black’s appointment first appeared in this month’s OPM UK, and today Vice President of Codies development Gavin Cheshire also confirmed Black won’t be working alone, he’ll have two other big wigs from the industry with him too in Tom Gillo fro SCE London and Andrew Wilson who was Senior Producer on Split/Second.

“With Stuart Black directing the vision for our new IP in production, deployment of EGO and key development figures heading up a highly skilled team, our Guildford facility offers great potential for development talent based in the South East who want to join a growing studio and work on original titles” said Cheshire.

The ‘Next Month’ part of in the current issue of  OXM UK says that the mag’s next edition will feature: “The world exclusive reveal of the shooter that everybody asked for…”

That quote will certainly get the rumour mill into overdrive.

Gran Turismo 5 shows massively improved textures

Posted in PlayStation 3, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios with tags , on February 15, 2010 by James Love

GTPlanet have been comparing shots of the Fuji Speedway that shows the huge visual improvements among the latest builds of Gran Turismo 5 over what we were able to see in Prologue.

Notable improvements are grass looking more like well… grass with tyre marks through it insanely detailed. Clumps of muck and dirt now fly off tyres when they verge off the tarmac, and the track itself looks more worn like a racing track should do.

Check out the comparison shots after the jump, or head over to GTPlanet to see a video comparison.

SCEA warn of PlayStation 3 drought

Posted in PlayStation 3 with tags on February 15, 2010 by James Love

SCEA are warning that the growing popularity of the PlayStation 3 could lead to a shortage of consoles available over the coming weeks.

Communications boss Patrick Seybold told MCV “We’re working very hard with our retail partners to meet consumer interest, but the demand is tremendously high for the PS3 and we expect tight inventory in the coming months.”

With big name exclusives such as Heavy Rain, God of War III and Final Fantasy XIII all within the space of just over a month, PS3 sales 276k units back in January could easily be surpassed.
