Rare say “it’d be nice” to revisit old IP’s “but that doesn’t mean we will”

Posted in Other Gaming with tags , on March 29, 2010 by James Love

Mark Betteridge, head of Microsoft-owned Rare, has been speaking to Develop about the possibility of returning to games from their past, with Betteridge saying Rare “would only go back to older franchises if [they] saw an opportunity to make the product in a different way that would do justice to [them].”

“We’d only go back to older franchises if we saw an opportunity to make the product in a different way that would do justice to that, not just for the sake of it.” Betteridge added.

He also added “a first-party’s job should be to define the Xbox 360 platform, and that’s what we are looking to do here,” with the Rare still in the market to create blockbuster titles according to Betteridge.

Pachter: PSP “doomed on small market share”

Posted in PlayStation Portable with tags on March 29, 2010 by James Love

Everyone’s favourite analyst Michael Pachter has forecast doom for the PSP unless Sony make “games come down in cost and that they can be competitive.”

Speaking on his GameTrailer show, Pachter said “I think they’re doomed on small market share until they get more competitive on price. The PSPgo is more expensive than most iPod Touch devices and the game library is more expensive that the iPod library. Nintendo’s got a huge cost advantage on the DS… I think Sony is running into a brick wall trying to compete in that sector.”

Ultimately he feels Sony will not be able to compete with the current PSP, with it “”destined to be second place to Nintendo on the pure game front, and overall in third place with iPod thrown in there. So no, I don’t think the PSP is going to be a huge success in future,” said Pachter.

Super Mario Kart dated on Wii Virtual Console

Posted in Nintendo Wii, Virtual Console with tags , on March 29, 2010 by James Love

Nintendo have announced the date for Super Mario Kart on the Wii Virtual Console, and it’s hitting virtual shelves this Friday.

None of this 3D malarky, it’s the original SNES version which could make you scream with elation or cry tears of rage, it was the definitive kart racer, which to this day has only really been rivalled by Mario Kart on the DS.

If you’ve got a Wii and have never played it, you owe it to yourself to buy this game.

Microsoft confirms USB storage; coming to 360 next week

Posted in Xbox 360 with tags , on March 29, 2010 by James Love

Microsoft have confirmed that the rumours about USB mass storage coming the 360 are indeed true, and an update will be coming April 6th to enable the use of external memory.

The update allows you to use a maximum external storage device of up to 32GB (you can get up to 32GB by attaching  maximum of 2 devices, as each device is limited to 16GB each) which means the update won’t be able to compete with Microsoft’s launch of their new 250GB HDD’s, which arrive in the UK on April 16th for £80.

Microsoft also announced they would be releasing Xbox-branded SanDisk USB sticks that come ready to be used right out of the box. The SanDisk sticks are set to be released in May, though no capacities or pricing was announced.

Posted in PlayStation 3 with tags , , , , on March 29, 2010 by James Love

You read that right, and no, it’s no joke, there’ll be a firmware update this Thursday, but this is the first update we can remember that actually removes a feature on the PlayStation 3.

Since the launch of the fat models there’s been the ability install an ‘Other OS’ in the XMB, however due to cost reasons.

According to the PS Blog, the reason for removal across all systems is due to ” security concerns,” however we think the cost factor of testing two separate firmwares for each update will also have played a role.
