Cologne 2009: EU Video Store Launching November

The Video Download Service will be available later this year. It’ll be for both PS3 and PSP and will begin with just films, but will expand out to include local content.

You’ll be able to rent and buy films in either SD or HD, and it will be coming to the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November, expanding to further territories throughout 2010.

Cologne 2009: Firmware 3.0 Announced

Andrew House has just announced PS3 Firmware 3.0 at GamesCom. It’ll feature animated themes, a What’s New section and some other great interface changes.

There will also be direct links to various TV services on the XMB — for example, iPlayer in the UK. For those interested, the battery meter has been moved in Firmware 3.0, and about time too!

PSN cards are also coming, we will see 50 euro and 20 euro versions in September.

Cologne 2009: PSN Hit’s 27 Million Registered Users

SCEE President Andrew House has told crowds at GamesCom that Sony now have have 27 million PSN users worldwide (11 million  in SCEE territories) with 560 million global downloads.

There are now 23.7 million PS3s in peoples’ homes worldwide and the SCEE install base has exceeded 10 million

Cologne 2009: EA Sports Active Sells 1.8 Million Units

At EA’s GamesCom conference today, Peter Moore announced that their Wii title EA Sports Active has sold a 1.8 million units, which isn’t too bad for a Wii Sports clone. It also makes it EA’s biggest selling Wii game to date.

Moreover, EA are set to bring more workouts to the game through DLC, adding 35 new activities this November to help you shed unwanted pounds.

Today at GamesCom EA and Bioware have released a new trailer for their sci-fi epic Mass Effect 2.

Mass Effect 2 is scheduled to launch Early 2010 on PC and Xbox 360.

Cologne 2009: Battlefield 1943 Hits 1 Million Downloads

For a game that is being only digitally-distributed, Battlefield 1943 has been a monumental hit for EA and DICE as they announced at GamesCom their WW2 FPS has smashed the 1 million download mark.

EA had previously announced that the game had smashed day one and week one sales records on XBL and PSN with it being downloaded over 600,000 times.

EA’s Dante’s Inferno will launch Febuary 9th 2010 in the US and Febuary 12th 2010 in the EU, a similar timeframe to the provisional date for it’s rival God of War III which launches March 2010.

EA showcased the 6th circle of Hell at GC and a new ‘Richeousness’ feature, where you can choose to either absolve or punish the souls you find as you descend through Hell.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will launch March 5th in Europe and in America on March 2nd 2010.

Squad play is a key feature of the series. “Bad Company 2 will encourage players to work as a four-person team to achieve a common goal” whilst Bad Company 2 will have what DICE call ‘Destruction 2.0′, basically blowing out small holes will allow snipers to make their own vantage points in the maps, allowing for unique attacks on the enemy.

Cologne 2009: Brutal Legend Demo Out September

EA has just announced at GamesCom that a demo for Double Fine’s Brutal Legend will hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this September.

The demo will be downloadable through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

The game will launch in the EU on October 16th.

Cologne 2009: SingStar: Beatles coming

MCV are reporting that Sony have tied a deal with EA to release a SingStar game based on the songs of 60′s band The Beatles.

The game is set to launch in September this year along side the The Beatles: Rock Band game from EA, and it will be an instrument-free port of the game to a degree.

The Beatles will be the fourth band to have their own dedicated SingStar game following in the steps of ABBA, Queen and Take That.
